Sophos Control Center Upgrade

This document is for upgrading the Sophos Control Center 2.0.xxxx to the new Sophos Control Center 4.0.xxx. Sophos is phasing out the 2.0 control centers as of March, and also phasing out the old Sophos Anti-Virus 7.6 version to the new 9.5 version. Anyone with Sophos standalone 7.6 will need to upgrade to the 9.5 version by logging into Sophos and downloading the new version. For the PC’s that are part of the Sophos Control Center, the 9.5 version will be automatically installed after the new 4.0 Control Center is installed. There are a few things to know before upgrading:

1.       The drive where Sophos is currently installed needs to have at least 1.6 GB of free space. I have found that at least 2 GB of free space works better, as you may need to reboot between parts of the installation if there is less than 2GB.

2.       Backup the current Sophos installation in case of installation problems.

3.       The server will need to be booted at least once, and maybe twice during installation. This could be an issue for critical servers, as the reboot may need to be done off-hours.

The first step is to back up the current Sophos configuration. The way to do this is:

1.       Back up the registry key: HKLM\Software\Sophos\Certification Manager

2.       Run the Windows backup program and backup folder: C:\Program Files\MSSQL\$MSSQLSOPHOS

The SQL folder path to backup may vary depending on where SQL Server is installed.

The second step is to download the installer for the Sophos Control Center 4.0. That can be found by logging into Sophos and navigating to the Sophos Security Suite SBE.

Sophos will not allow you to change drives on the upgrade. Wherever the original Sophos application is installed, that is where it will stay. The installer overwrites the current installation. If drive space is short on the installation drive, pick an alternate drive to download and unpack the installer. It doesn’t matter which drive the update installs from, and does not need to be on the same drive as the current Sophos installation.

After the installer is downloaded, double click the executable and it will unzip the installation files into new folders. You can pick any location to unzip these, which may be important it drive space is at a premium. The downloaded installer is 217 MB and the unzipped installer folders are 365 MB.

The installation will begin after the unzipping. In my experience, it takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete the upgrade, and then the machine will require a reboot to apply the changes. Until the machine is rebooted, none of the upgrade features will apply.

Currently, the Sophos Control Center 2.0 users are already getting warning messages on the servers, and the end users will be getting warning messages on their PC’s by Jan 10 that the expiration of their current product is near. If we get calls on this issue, the upgrade is due on that machine or enterprise.

For a good reference before installing, read the readscc_4_eng.html document that is unzipped with the installation package.
